About the HSN Code & GST Rate Finder (FMCG)

Content reviewed 6 August 2026

Every product in India is classified under an HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) code, and the GST rate hangs off that code. Businesses above ₹5 crore turnover must print 6-digit HSN codes on invoices; smaller businesses need 4 digits on B2B invoices.

Getting the HSN wrong is not cosmetic — the e-invoice portal (IRP) validates codes and rejects mismatches, and a wrong rate creates ITC disputes for your buyer. This lookup covers the common FMCG categories a distributor bills daily.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I use the wrong HSN on an e-invoice?+

The IRP can reject the invoice outright, and if it passes with a wrong rate you become liable for the differential tax plus interest. Your buyer's input credit can also be questioned in scrutiny.

How many HSN digits do I need on my invoices?+

Turnover above ₹5 crore: 6 digits on all invoices. Up to ₹5 crore: 4 digits on B2B invoices (optional for B2C). Exporters use 8 digits.

Why do similar products have different GST rates?+

Classification follows composition and packaging, not the shelf category. Loose staples sold unpackaged are usually exempt while the same goods pre-packaged and labelled attract 5%; detergent sits at 18% even though the soap beside it is 5%. Check the code, not the intuition.
